Microneedling, a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation technique, has gained significant traction in the world of dermatology and beauty. This procedure, which involves the use of tiny needles to create micro punctures in the top layer of the skin, is a popular technique to enhance the skin's natural ability to heal itself. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, microneedling is used to boost collagen production, reduce scars, and promote a smoother, more vibrant skin texture.
Does microneedling hurt?
With microneedling, you're working with the body's anatomy and natural healing response to keep skin healthy and elastic. As the name implies, tiny needles are used to create micro holes in the skin, which your body then fills in with new, fresh skin, encouraging the skin to ramp up its collagen production in response to the minor injuries caused by the needles.
Even though the needles normally only go between 0.25mm-2.5mm deep, many practitioners apply a numbing cream before the procedure to help minimize any discomfort, which can vary based on your individual pain tolerance. While not necessarily a soothing facial on its own (even though it is often combined with other, more relaxing modalities), with continued treatments, the skin often adapts well and the discomfort decreases.
The natural healing process that microneedling invokes is what makes this skin treatment particularly effective for a variety of skin concerns, including:
- Acne Scarring: By stimulating collagen production, microneedling helps to fill in and smooth out the pits of acne scars.
- Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Increased collagen levels can reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, giving the skin firmness and a younger look.
- Uneven Skin Texture and Tone: The process helps to even out skin irregularities, leading to smoother and more uniform skin.
Microneedling vs. lasers
Compared to other treatments like lasers, microneedling is generally less invasive and typically involves a shorter recovery time, making it a preferred option for many. It also avoids the heat damage that lasers can impart, which makes microneedling suitable for all skin types, including those that might be too sensitive for thermal-based procedures.
As we age, our facial fat tends to decrease, contributing to a more gaunt, saggy look. While lasers can also be great, for example, for evening skin tone and texture, many unfortunately generate heat in the skin, which can cause our facial fat to reduce in volume, leading to further sagging. With microneedling, you work with your body to generate a natural healing response and stimulate collagen production without heat, thus avoiding to zap precious facial fat.
The importance of choosing the right practitioner
While microneedling is generally a safe procedure, the importance of selecting a skilled practitioner cannot be overstressed. An experienced professional ensures that the process is done under sterile conditions using the right technique, which is crucial to avoid potential side effects such as infections or more severe skin damage. It is also important to avoid practitioners who use harsh, alchol-based products that can dry out and irritate the skin post-treatment.
Our team, based in NYC, can highly recommend Angel Pakal at Bella Noor Skincare (we don't have any affiliation with this provider, but just love to highlight and support other female-founded small businesses that do great work!). We find her sessions to be super good value for the fair price point, especially considering the quality of her work, session length, and holistic approach.
How to get the best results after microneedling
Microneedling is a really great procedure for healthy skin and graceful aging - however, there are some important things to think about. Apart from choosing a good provider, proper aftercare following a microneedling procedure is absolutely essential to achieving the best results and minimizing downtime. Since the procedure creates micro injury in the skin, it is important to stay out of the sun/apply SPF and keep your skin deeply moisturized after treatment. Also avoid doing microneedling on active acne, open wounds, if you have conditions such as eczema, psoriasis or a bleeding disorder. Many people find that fall/winter is particularly great for microneedling sessions, as sun exposure is limited.
Giving skin ample time, usually about 6-8 weeks, in between sessions to fully heal is critical, as too frequent sessions can create hyperpigmentation and irritation.
Keeping the skin moisturized is key for good post-treatment results, as the skin tends to get a little bit drier and can peel slightly after a session while new, fresh skin is revealed. To avoid unnecessary dry wrinkles from forming, especially when it comes to parts of your face where you are extra expressive such as the 11's or forehead, make sure you apply a rich moisturizer for the next few days after microneedling. Avoiding that the skin dries out also helps keep skin clear, as the skin can otherwise respond to the dryness by temporarily increasing sebum production, which can lead to pimples forming.
The Pure Nilotica Melt is the ideal companion post-treatment. The all-natural, concentrated moisture balm helps to prevent dryness, flakiness, and reduce peeling, allowing you to maximize the session results. Naturally rich in Vitamin A, E + K, the same antioxidants as in green tea, barrier-repairing essential fatty acids, and soothing Allantoin, it provides nourishment and promotes deep healing.
Apply a pea-sized amount to your face, paying special attention to wrinkle-prone areas. At night, massage in a slightly thicker layer as a glow-giving overnight mask to maximize results.
Microneedling as a keystone of graceful aging
Microneedling is more than just a cosmetic procedure; it's a powerful skincare technique that supports the skin’s own regenerative abilities and promotes graceful aging at any age. Like most things when it comes to the health of our bodies and overall well-being, there is no magic pill and continuously looking after our bodies is essential. While many people do see positive results already after the first session, best results happen when microneedling is part of your ongoing routine, perhaps with a session every 6 months or a couple of times per year.
When coupled with excellent post-treatment care like the Pure Nilotica Melt, we love microneedling to enhance skin health + function, as part of a holistic approach to well-being.
