We are deeply saddened to announce that Leila Janah, LXMI Founder and CEO, passed away last night due to complications from Epithelioid Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. She was 37 years old.

Leila Janah Bio

Leila spearheaded a global impact sourcing movement and was a champion for environmental sustainability and ending global poverty. She was the founder and CEO of three organizations, all with a common mission to “Give Work”; Samasource, a global technology leader in training data annotation and machine learning validation; LXMI, a fair-trade, organic skin care company; and Samaschool, a non-profit focused on reskilling for the new economy.

Her commitment to creating a better world was unparalleled. The ripple effects of her work will be felt for generations. We are all committed to continuing Leila’s work and to ensuring her legacy and vision is carried out for years to come.

We will miss Leila's infectious laugh, her tenacious spirit, and her ability to inspire all she encountered to be a force for good in the world. Our deepest sympathies extend to Leila’s husband, Tassilo, her stepdaughter, her family, and her friends.

With love,
The LXMI Family

More information to come.

  • I knew that Leila was sick but I did not know her illness was so advanced and serious. I did not know her, but this is so saddening and upsetting. She was incredibly accomplished and good hearted and even without knowing her personally I believe that the world is emptier without her in it. What an amazing woman we have lost 😞

  • I am very saddened that I am just now hearing of Leila. To be so young and so passionate about erasing world poverty is amazing. I will support this cause in whatever way I can in memory of her.

  • I also did not know of Leila until today. However, I do have a product that I LOVE called Pure Nilotica Melt that I received in one of my cosmetic subscriptions. I heard of Leila today, on the Today Show with Willy Geist in the United States. I’m saddened by her loss. She sounds like a remarkable young lady of only 37 years of age. She was remarkable in her short life. GONE TOO SOON! I will continue to purchase her products so that I may help the women in South Africa. My thoughts and prayers go out to her friends, family and all that knew and love Leila. What a great loss to the world. RIP Leila. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🌹🌹❤️❤️🙏🏻🙏🏻 Linda M.

  • I am deeply saddened as I have only just learned of the amazing work that Leila did in her amazing too short life this morning as the Today Show as a life well lived. And that it certainly was. I just read both about all the amazing efforts and successes she had with her companies completely committed to helping, doing and being better trying to save this world from the injustices and the harm to our world. I hope to now follow these companies Leila founded and try to be better. I pray for her entire family and the company. May she Rest In Peace. And may we all follow in her footsteps to be better humans. #leilastrong #belikeleila
